Drunken Foreigner / The Messthetics / STEFA / Mourning A BLKstar
January 12 @ 9:00 pm - January 13 @ 2:00 am
Every year I like to throw a ‘Weird World’ party in Brooklyn to coincide with the APAP music conference and the Winter Jazz Fest – two annual rites that, every January, brings musicians from around the world to Manhattan. This year it falls on my birthday!
Dave Kadden and myself (Crown Vic) will DJ some ‘weird world’ records and we have some fine live music entertainment!
Mourning A BLKstar Creating songs of both eulogy and revolution, the expansion of 21st century black consciousness is felt in waves through Ohio’s Mourning [A] BLKStar. A force that has deep conviction, purpose, and weight, songs are voiced through the lens of Afrofuturism, chopped up drum grooves, stark melodies, and historic sample pulls. Mourning [A] BLKStar is bringing forth a conversation that aligns with the political and emotional state of this world, drawing together modern day spirituals of reverence and despair.
The Messthetics is a new instrumental trio with Brendan Canty (D), Joe Lally (B), and Anthony Pirog (G). Brendan Canty and Joe Lally were the rhythm section of the band Fugazi from it’s inception in 1987 to it’s period of hiatus in 2002. This is the first band they’ve had together since that time. Joe has returned from Italy, and is ready to play. Brendan is very happy to have him back. The two missed each other, and the playing of the music together, so the feeling of the world being righted is right there in the foundation. Anthony Pirog is one of the greatest guitarists anywhere. He challenges our preconceived notions about genre and guitar sound. He continues to shape, tear down and reshape his unique conceptions of what guitar can be. The Messthetics is an unsupervised sonic playground that is driven primarily by Anthony’s imagination, and his not-so-latent desire to torture his rhythm section with odd time signatures. The three of them, Canty, Pirog, and Lally, are The Messthetics. Debut album on Dischord to be released in 2018
Drunken Foreigner Band is a Brooklyn-based ensemble that makes a sprawling electrified iteration of the Akha and Lam Lao musics of Thailand and Laos. The majority of the band’s music was learned from cassette tapes of the largely-vocal music traditions, gathered by keyboardist Dave Kadden on his trips to Southeast Asia. Comprising members of Sunwatchers, Invisible Circle and other experimental Brooklyn outfits, they are releasing their debut LP “White Guy Disease” on Electric Cowbell Records.
STEFA is a vocal artist and performer focused on the intersection of politics, the self and her cultures. she revels in taking apart language and musical structures through sonic layering and improvisation while drawing inspiration from her indigenous ancestry and classical music background. by projecting new narratives, she is taking back her power. sounds to expect: rumbling jungle rhythm&blues opera of the diaspora. debut EP coming soon. http://www.stefalives.com
