Hill Center is thrilled to welcome Gaiteros de San Guashington as part of our Global Sounds series. Dounouya (DOON-EE-YA) is the West African word for “The Whole World.” This series of singular concerts, curated and hosted by Jim Thomson, features musicians at the forefront of the global music scene. Thompson will facilitate a brief conversation with the artist.
Gaiteros de Sanguashington is a DC-based band, composed of 6 Colombian musicians from different parts of the country. They play a variety of Colombian music, including Vallenato and Cumbia (popular folk music from Colombia’s Carribean region) and Tropipop (a blend of traditional musical forms with foreign Latin genres such as salsa and Merengue). Instruments include accordion, Tambor Alegre (percussion instrument of African origin), Tambora (two-headed drum), Bass and other percussion. Band members of Gaiteros de San Guashington came together for the first time for the 2014 FIFA world Cup. They have emerged as one of the premier Colombian bands, recognized and beloved by the Colombian and Latino Community.
