Proyecto Jazz is a Latin Jazz collaboration among 8 musicians who have been playing together for several years in the DMV area. Influences span out to Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Poncho Sanchez, Mongo Santamaria, A.C. Jobim, and many others. Playing original compositions by our pianist, Leonardo Garcia, and arrangements of the classics, transcribed by our bassist Mike Matarazzo. This “Proyecto”, which is Spanish for project, was begun by Joliet, IL native and current DC Trombonist, Tony Tovar. Created out of love for music, Proyecto Jazz has just begun its journey into the Latin Jazz scene with 2 packed house performances at the historic and renowned Twins Jazz Club on U St. The rest of the group is comprised of: Colombian Singer and flautist Verny Varela, Puerto Rican sensation on the Congas, Hector “Coco” Barez, Haiti percussionist and Timablero, Dominque Patrick Noel, Jesus Gonzalez on Bongo, Joe Brotherton on Trumpet, and Tony Tovar on Trombone.
